My letter to area editors has been published in quite a few area newspapers in Hamilton, Essex, St. Lawrence and Franklin counties recently. Many thanks to the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, Press Republican, Tupper Lake Free Press, Adirondack Weekly, The Lake Placid News, The Adirondack Express, Hamilton County News and North Country Now for publishing the letter. I felt it important, as always, to let North Country Life Flight know how much my family and I appreciate them for helping to save my life. I have met many other patients and their families who share that appreciation.
David and I never take the mission of North Country Life Flight for granted. We often see the helicopter flying near our home as it transports patients to Burlington, Plattsburgh, Albany; whatever medical facility is most appropriate. It’s always disturbing to think of someone critically ill or injured on board; but also comforting to know that Life Flight’s specially trained critical care flight team is getting them to where they will get the care they need. I have no memory of my Life Flight; but when I hear that helicopter I feel safe for some reason. It always comforts me. Maybe somewhere in my subconscious I do remember that flight.
Last week, David and I were even more grateful for Life Flight as we got a phone call one evening that his cousin Guy (Orv) Stephenson, one of our dearest friends, had suffered a heart attack while at work in Lake Placid and was flown from Adirondack Medical Center to CVPH. Our cousin will be just fine thank God. We also thank North Country Life Flight for, as my sister Mary wrote me, "saving two of the most important people in David’s life."
Here’s my letter to local editors. David and I have sent our check to North Country Life Flight and I hope you will join us in helping to raise $20,000 this summer to say thank you for 20 years of air rescue missions. Please be as generous as you are able.

Dear Editor:
This year marks the 20th year that North Country Life Flight has served our region with its air rescue mission. When I experienced a critical illness; one I was not expected to survive, North Country Life Flight came to my aid. I credit them with not only being part of the team that helped save my life, but they also helped minimize my disabilities through their excellent care and quick transport to a distant trauma center.
You don’t see their name in papers or media often. Given the critical injuries and illnesses of their patients, along with concerns for privacy, they don’t seek publicity for the work they do. But I can tell you, they are an extremely professional and hardworking group of people that deserve our support. They do their job quietly; they are "neighbors helping neighbors."
Today, I write this as a volunteer with North Country Life Flight; I’m trying to "pay forward" the tremendous gift of life I was given. I’m hoping everyone who appreciates their 20 years of service will join me in saying thank you and being as generous as they are able. We’d also love to receive some patient/family stories that we can share on the North Country Life Flight web site and blog. Visit at www.northcountrylifeflight.org
To commemorate this 20th anniversary year, I am asking all my North Country neighbors to join me in supporting their critical service. I am only one of the many patients they have helped over the 20 years but, like many others, I know first-hand how valuable that service is. I’ve met some of the former patients and their families at events. We’ve shared hugs, laughter and even tears. We also share the gratitude for the chance of an extended life that North Country Life Flight helped provide.
I’ve set a goal of $20,000 from new donors this summer to help North Country Life Flight remain a viable service, ready to respond to the needs of this region’s critically ill and injured. Together, we can meet that goal if we all respond today. I’d like 999 of my North Country neighbors to send a check of $20 or more to North Country Life Flight, PO Box 994, Saranac Lake, NY 12983. Whatever you can afford will make a difference. I’ll write my check today. Please join me in supporting this important mission.

North Country Life Flight Ground Team volunteer and former patient Jan Washburn would like to share a gift giving idea.

Jan was inspired when talking with a friend who was helping clean out her husband's Grandma's house now that she is living in a nursing home. She told Jan, "My advice for everyone is to stop buying gifts for their relatives who really don't anything. We have uncovered so many unused items: scented candles, knick-knacks, clothing still with tags, even boxes of candy that went uneaten." Her family has now begun a tradition of giving to a not-for profit in honor of loved ones instead of buying gift items.

Jan hopes you will consider starting a similar tradition in your family and suggests a gift to North Country Life Flight. Send us the name and address of the person you are honoring with your tax-deductible gift. We will send them a card to let them know how much you care. A gift in their honor to North Country Life Flight can mean so much when those dollars are put to use to help save lives. Send your gift to:

North Country Life Flight
PO Box 994
Saranac Lake, NY 12983

Let us know the occasion you are honoring so that we may send the appropriate sentiment.

North Country Life Flight was honored to be included in the Found Caravan Corvette Club "Cruisin' Around the Mountains" event this month. Over 100 gorgeous Corvettes participated and North Country Life Flight joined the Club at their luncheon at Ellis Chevrolet Buick Pontiac GMC in Malone on Saturday, June 6.
The importance of the North Country Life Flight Air Medical Rescue team was evident to all who attended after a personal testimonal was given by the family of a Life Flight patient. By the end of the day, $1,500 was raised by the Club and donated to the local charity. The auction of the print, Concours d' Elegance at Ault Park by David Snyder raised $500 for Life Flight. The remaining dollars raised were individual donations which is the backbone of North Country Life Flight's funding.

We thank all the Club members and Ellis Automotive for their hospitality and generosity.

SITDOWN, SMACKDOWN!

It was a fabulous day in Lake Placid at the historic 1980 Olympic Center Arena as volunteers took a seat to raise funds for North Country Life Flight. It was the inaugural "Sit Down, Smack Down," an event sponsored by WSLP-FM 93.3. In less than 30 minutes, energetic and motivated volunteers sat in every one of the 7,700 seats in the Arena! Among the spirited volunteers taking a seat for Life Flight, were U.S. Olympians, the Lake Placid High School Honor Society, Life Flight volunteers and Tri-Lakes politicians. In fact, WSLP was trying to get a friendly competition going between the Mayors. Tri-Lakes politicians supported the event in full force. Pictured (from l to r) are: Mayor Tom Michael (Saranac Lake); Mayor Mickey Desmarais (Tupper Lake); WSLP On-Air Talent Dane Summers; Harrietstown Supervisor Larry Miller and Mayor Craig Randall (Lake Placid) . North Country Life Flight was invited to participate in the Champlain Valley Classic Cruisers 2009 Spring Nationals this past weekend at the Clinton County Fairgrounds in Morrisonville, NY. An annual family event, this year's Spring Nationals attracted 400 cars and many families from across the North Country.
Former Life Flight patient and car club member, Jan Washburn, wrote the Classic Cruisers, as a Life Flight fund-raising volunteer, asking them to consider adding North Country Life Flight as one of the charities the club supports. Club officers voted and agreed to add North Country Life Flight as their fourth charity this year.
North Country Life Flight was present both Saturday and Sunday with an informational table offering literature about our mission; accepting pledges in support of WSLP's "SitDown, SmackDown" event coming up in Lake Placid on Saturday, May 30; selling handcrafted cutting boards donated by Sid Ward of Jay, NY and visiting with our North Country neighbors. Several former patients stopped by with their families to say thank you to Life Flight.
The Spring Nationals raises funds for four local organizations and on Sunday afternoon the Champlain Valley Classic Cruisers presented Jan and Mary Connors, Life Flight President and CEO, with a check for $1,000 for North Country Life Flight.
The amazing thing about the well-organized wonderful event was the amount of work and money put into each of the 400 cars. It was quite impressive, whether you are a car buff or not. Also quite impressive was the Washburn's entry, a 1969 RS/SS Chevrolet Camaro. Jan's husband David spent five years restoring the Camaro and it brought home a couple of awards from the weekend's festivities.
North Country Life Flight was invited to participate in other car shows. We will of course be in Lake Placid on Saturday and in June we will be at shows in Malone and Saranac Lake.

THE FLIGHT OF YOUR LIFE

North Country Life Flight is an amazing concept—that twenty-one years later continues to be a great idea, a worthwhile initiative and successful community effort. In the beginning, what we never anticipated was the fact that each year Life Flight would become more important. This year, our twenty-first year, has the potential of being our most important. With the shortage of physicians in our rural areas, the distances of specialists and the centralizing of specialty care, there has never been a greater need in regions like the North Country for air medical transport. Generous community support helps keep our service available to patients without cost - contributions are welcomed. Mail to North Country Life Flight, PO Box 994, Saranac Lake, NY 12983
